Send a refund or receipt
Before you start
This article is for admins who want to resend a receipt to supporters or issue refunds.
If you are a supporter who wants to resend a receipt to yourself, view our supporter guide. If you need to request a refund, reach out to the organization.
Issue a refund
Important: You cannot refund pending transactions until they show as successful. For credit card transactions, you may need to wait 24 hours before you can issue a refund and 5-7 business days to issue a refund for ACH transactions.
You can issue refunds through GoFundMe Pro within your payment solution's refund period.
- GoFundMe Pay & PayPal: 180 days
- ACH transactions: 90 days
- Braintree: 180 days
- Authorize.net: 120 days
To issue a refund:
- In GoFundMe Pro, select Transactions and Transaction History
- Select the ID of the transaction you want to refund
- Under Order details, select Edit > Refund
Depending on the bank, refunds take 5-10 business days to appear in your supporter's account.
Can I issue a partial refund?
No, partial refunds are not available at this time.
Refunding ACH transactions
When processing refunds for ACH transactions, there is a risk that supporters may be refunded twice if they dispute the transaction with both you and their bank. To prevent this, contact your supporter immediately and keep them informed about the processing time and status of their refund.
Resend a receipt
- In your account, select Transactions and Transaction History
- Select the ID of the transaction you want to refund
- Under the Supporter information, select Send receipt
- Confirm the email address
- Select Send receipt
Tip: To change the email address, select Send to a different email address. You can also use this option to send a receipt to yourself for testing.
Frequently asked questions
Will the transaction fee be returned?
Each payment solution has its own rules for returning fees on refunded transactions:
- GoFundMe Pay: Returns all transaction fees
- PayPal: Returns all transaction fees
- Braintree: Does not return transaction fees
- Authorize.net: Does not return transaction fees
Are receipts sent for offline donations or tickets?
Yes, you can send a receipt for offline donations. Receipts are not available for offline tickets or registrations, and must be provided by the organization.
Is an email sent to the donor when a refund is processed?
No, emails are not sent through GoFundMe Pro when a refund is processed.
Why are my donors not receiving receipts for donations made with ACH?
Donors will not receive a receipt immediately if they donate with ACH. GoFundMe Pro waits until the transaction has settled and the bank confirms the funds have cleared before sending the tax receipt to the donor.
Your donors can check their online banking portal or contact their bank directly. The transaction will typically display as "Pending" or "Processing" almost immediately on their end.
Can I send a receipt for a refunded transaction?
No, receipts can only be sent for successful transactions.
