Before you start

If you need help setting up GA4 ecommerce tracking, please contact our partners team and we can make an introduction for you.

If you need help setting up Google Tag Manager, view our guide.

GoFundMe Pro was previously known as Classy, so you may notice some triggers and values contain that name.

With Google Tag Manager's GA4 tag, it's simple to set up ecommerce conversion tracking for donations, fundraising page sign-ups, ticket purchases, and registrations. Importing variables, tags, and triggers into your Google Tag Manager container allows you to quickly tap into the power of GoFundMe Pro's data layer.

Along the way, you can push additional parameters with your ecommerce conversions so you can measure and analyze GoFundMe Pro data you couldn’t previously with Universal Analytics, like donation frequency, designation name, member ID, and more.

Things to keep in mind:

  • As Google updates GA4, your setup may need to be adjusted. Please review Google’s official documentation, as well as their Tips for implementing GA4 with Google Tag Manager.
  • You must use specific formatting to push GoFundMe Pro transactions into the Monetization section of GA4. Follow the formatting as listed in our guide to ensure that the section works properly.

GA4 site tag for GoFundMe Pro

Before you set up GA4 ecommerce tracking, install GA4’s basic site tag across your GoFundMe Pro account using Google Tag Manager. If you don’t have a GA4 property yet, follow Google’s instructions to create one and install it on your main website.

  1. Open Google Tag Manager and select the account and container you have installed on your GoFundMe Pro account.
  2. Create a new tag and select the Google Tag type.
  3. Under Tag Configuration, enter the Measurement ID from your Google Analytics 4 property.
    • You can find this in GA4 under Settings > Data Streams > Select a Data Stream > Copy the Measurement ID in the top right-hand corner.
    • You can create a new web stream specifically for GoFundMe Pro or use the same one as your main website. We recommend using the same web stream as your main website in order to avoid cross-domain tracking issues and follow Google’s guidance on multiple web data streams.
  4. Under Triggering, choose the trigger All Pages.
  5. Select Save and Submit > Publish to push your new GA4 site tag live.
  6. Test to ensure your GA4 site tag is firing correctly on GoFundMe Pro by using GTM’s Preview Mode and looking for a successful tag fire on a GoFundMe Pro campaign page. You can also visit the Realtime section in GA4 and look for a view on a GoFundMe Pro campaign page.

GA4 events

Set up the following GoFundMe Pro events to fire automatically in GA4:

Events Glossary

Event Name Details
classy_page_view Views of an individual GoFundMe Pro campaign page. You can filter down by the page.name data layer variable to various types of visits (ex: donate page vs confirmation page visits). Renamed in GA4 from the original data layer event custom_page_view for clarity.
supporter_loaded The supporter views a personal peer-to-peer fundraising page or team fundraising page on GoFundMe Pro.
purchase Supporter completes their transaction. Includes donations, registrations, and tickets. Events with “ga” are formatted for Google Analytics Universal Analytics Ecommerce Tracking, and used when setting up GA4 Ecommerce Tracking. Renamed in GA4 from the original data layer event ga_purchase due to GA4 Ecommerce formatting requirements.

Note: Studio campaigns have a different event name, so you'll need to use a different trigger outlined in the example below.
add_to_cart Supporter adds a ticket to their cart during the checkout process (Ticketed Events, Registration with Fundraising). This event fires once for each individual item added to the cart. Renamed in GA4 from the original data layer event ga_add_to_cart due to GA4 Ecommerce formatting requirements.
remove_from_cart Supporter removes a ticket from their cart during the checkout process (Ticketed Events, Registration with Fundraising). This event fires once for each individual item removed from the cart. Renamed in GA4 from the original data layer event ga_remove_from_cart due to GA4 Ecommerce formatting requirements.
new_fundraising_page Supporter signs up as a fundraiser (Peer-to-Peer, Registration with Fundraising)
new_team Supporter joins or creates a fundraising team (Peer-to-Peer, Registration with Fundraising)

The events listed above use a separate tag in GTM. These tags access information from GoFundMe Pro's data layer and push it into GA4. Be sure to follow the instructions carefully to avoid any issues.

  1. First, follow the steps in GoFundMe Pro's GTM documentation to import the template file into your container.
  2. Then, create a new tag in the GTM container using the Google Analytics 4: Event tag type. Follow the instructions below when setting up each tag.

Note: When you set up GA4 event tags in GTM, you can add various parameters as custom dimensions in two ways:

  • Event Parameters: Parameters that are specific to the event. (For example, the total gross amount of a donation that was just made.) These are “event scope” dimensions in GA4.
  • User Properties: Google defines these as custom dimensions that “identify static or slowly changing attributes of your users”. (For example, the user’s member ID or fundraising goal.) These are “user scope” dimensions in GA4.

Examples

In the instructions below, you’ll see our suggested approach for adding GoFundMe Pro variables as either event parameters or user properties. What’s important to keep in mind is that event scoped dimensions apply only to the event they send with, whereas user scoped dimensions apply to all events for that individual user.

  5. Create a new custom dimension for each event parameter and user property that is included on a GoFundMe Pro event tag. Be sure to select the correct scope and copy the event parameter exactly from the tag you set it.
