Giving Cart
Before you start: To unlock the feature, you can request a Giving Cart add-on. Organizations with the Advanced package already have Giving Cart as part of their plan.
Giving Cart lets you offer supporters multiple ways to support your cause. When activated, every donate button on your page will show + Add to cart, and supporters can add multiple donations toward separate program designations in a single transaction.
Note: Giving Cart is only available on Campaign Studio pages.
Activate
To turn on cart functionality:
- In the Studio campaign designer, select the Settings tab
- Under Cart functionality, select On and save changes
Once turned on, you can add a donation form or impact tile to your page, and supporters can make multiple donations per transaction.
How do items appear in the cart?
When supporters check out, each item will show the name of the program they’re supporting and whether it is one-time or recurring. We recommend creating clear titles for your program designations, so donors know exactly what they're giving to when they select a designation on the donation form or on an impact tile.
For impact tiles, we recommend creating program designations that match the tile heading to ensure consistency for the supporter. For example, if the heading is School lunches, create a corresponding program designation and select it for that tile.
Reporting
Giving Cart transactions appear in Transaction History as a grouped order. This means the individual contributions that were a part of the transaction are grouped under a single Order ID.
To view Giving Cart transactions broken down into their individual contributions, go to Order Items.
To access the Order Items report:
- In the menu, select Transactions
- Select Order Items
When you select a Giving Cart transaction’s Order ID, you can view the gross and net transaction amounts, fees paid, and program designations selected.
Note: With Giving Cart, the Transaction ID column is renamed to Order ID. This helps to accommodate transactions with multiple items and does not change existing Transaction IDs.
Managing an order
You can go to a supporter’s Order in Transaction History or Order Items by selecting their Order ID. Then, you can refund the entire transaction or resend a receipt.
To refund the transaction:
- Select the supporter’s Order ID
- Next to Order details, select Edit
- Select Refund and confirm
Important: You can only refund the entire order. Partial refunds are not available at this time.
Use cases
A few ways you can incorporate Giving Cart into your campaign include:
- Running a virtual food, supply, or fund-a-need drive in such a way that it brings your donors’ impact to life in tangible and creative ways
- Facilitating “split designation” experiences by using gifts of various sizes for more than one program
- Promoting recurring giving alongside one-time gifts
Things to know
Giving Cart does support:
- Refunding entire orders but not individual donations
- Recurring Giving Plans will show a list of transactions, but not updates
- Dedications can be applied at the order level, but not for each donation
Giving Cart does not support:
- Transferring orders to another campaign
- Changing the program designation for individual order items
- Tracking inventory or selling merchandise
- Automatically removing impact blocks from the page after someone donates to them
Note: The latest guided checkout experience is not currently available for Giving Cart campaigns.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know which program a contribution was made towards?
The Order Items report shows the Program Designation the supporter contributed to. You can view it by referring to the Designation Name column.
We recommend using Program Designation names that are simple and meaningful to you. This will help supporters understand what they are contributing to when they check out and help make reporting easier for admins.
How does Giving Cart impact Salesforce?
One-time donations are rolled up to one opportunity, and any recurring gifts will be listed as their own opportunity.
If multiple program designations are mapped to a single GAU, donations will be reflected in Salesforce attached to that GAU.
For example, if “New Books” and “School Lunches” are linked to the “Education” GAU in Salesforce, and a one-time donation of $10 is made to each of them, an opportunity for $20 in total is created in Salesforce. Within that $20 opportunity, two GAU allocations for $10 each will be created and linked to the “Education” GAU.
Note: Nonprofit Cloud does not yet support Giving Cart. Only the Salesforce integration with NPSP is currently supported.
How do fees work with Giving Cart?
Fees are calculated based on the donor’s total intended donation amount, including all the contributions in their order.
