Set up Google Analytics 4

Sign up for GoFundMe Pay to unlock this feature if it's not in your GoFundMe Pro account.
Before you start

If you don’t have a GA4 property, you’ll need to create one first.

Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is an analytics platform by Google, designed to track user interactions across your website and apps. You can integrate GA4 with your GoFundMe Pro account to help you make data-driven decisions on refining your fundraising strategy and boosting engagement.

Find your GA4 measurement ID

To set up GA4 with GoFundMe Pro, you'll start your GA4 account to find your measurement ID. To find the ID:

  1. Go to your GA4 properties' Home screen
  2. In the navigation menu, select Admin

  1. Select Data Streams
  2. Select the Data Stream to view the Stream Details. The Measurement ID will be an alphanumeric ID that starts with “G-.”
  3. Select Copy to copy the Measurement ID

Connect to GoFundMe Pro

After you copy your GA4 measurement ID, you’ll need to enter it in GoFundMe Pro. To enter the ID:

  1. In GoFundMe Pro, go to Apps & integrations > Explore
  2. Select Google Analytics 4
  3. Enter your Measurement ID into the appropriate field
  4. Select Enable Google Analytics 4

ga4 page within apps and extensions

You're all set! GA4 will now start tracking a number of events across your campaigns.

Note: While embedded donation forms are compatible with both GA4 and Google Tag Manager (GTM), certain events are only supported with GTM. If you already use GTM, find out more about which embedded specific events you can track.

Events

GoFundMe Pro's GA4 integration is configured for GA4 eCommerce events. The integration comes with a number of out-of-box events. View the table for a list of custom events included in the GoFundMe Pro integration and details on when the event will fire.

In addition to these events, GA4 automatically collects data on certain events like click and first_visit. Learn more about GA4’s automatically collected events.

Troubleshooting

When the Measurement ID for the property is activated on GoFundMe Pro, event data is passed from your GoFundMe Pro campaign pages to the GA4 dashboard. Please note that due to Google constraints, there can be delays of 24-48 hours between when an event occurs in GoFundMe Pro and when the data is available in your GA4 reports dashboard.

If you do not have event data in your dashboard, there are two ways to check that your GoFundMe Pro campaign pages are connected to GA4:

Realtime report visitor count

Make sure that the Realtime report visitor count in GA4 is incremented when you visit one of your GoFundMe Pro campaign pages.

  1. With GA4 activated for your organization, navigate to a live campaign page. Be sure that you are not browsing in incognito mode.
  2. In a separate browser tab or window, go to your GA4 Home page.
  3. Select Reports

  1. Select Realtime

  1. In the Realtime report, you should be able to observe live user activity on your site by page, event, and the user’s location. Learn more about the Realtime report.

Google Tag Assistant

You can also use Google Tag Assistant to check that the Measurement ID is loaded when you visit one of your GoFundMe Pro campaign pages.

  1. Go to Google Tag Assistant
  2. Select Add domain

  1. Enter the URL of the page you wish to test in the field URL field
  2. Select Connect

  1. A separate browser tab will open with the URL you entered, with a Tag Assistant box that reads “Tag Assistant Connected.” Do not close this page or click Finish in the box. This is what allows Google Tag Assistant to debug the page and check for site tags like the Measurement ID.
  2. The Google Tag Assistant page will refresh, and a box will read “Connected.” Select Continue.

  1. At the top of the screen, Google Tag Assistant will list the Google containers found on the page. This could include UA property IDs, GA4 measurement IDs, or GTM container IDs. A GA4 measurement ID will begin with “G-.” Confirm that this GA4 measurement ID matches the ID entered in GoFundMe Pro Manager.

  1. If the GA4 measurement ID is correct and you are still uncertain whether events are being captured on your GoFundMe Pro campaign pages, select the GA4 measurement ID in Google Tag Assistant.
  2. On the page connected to Google Tag Assistant, take an action that interacts with the page. For example, on a checkout page, you may toggle between donation frequencies or amounts.
  3. In Google Tag Assistant, observe the summary of events on the left side of the screen. This should mirror the events you took on the connected page. Select one of the events in the Summary section.

  1. The Output section will display the Hits Sent, the data injected into the Data Layer, and errors (if any) for the event. Select Data Layer.

  1. The data layer will display the values for event, event category, and which Measurement ID this data will be sent to. It should match the measurement ID entered in GoFundMe Pro Manager.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I learn more about GA4?

To learn more about GA4, we recommend viewing Google’s Analytics Help Center articles.

I already use GoFundMe Pro's Google Tag Manager integration. Do I need to turn on the GA4 integration to track data in GA4?

No. If you already have the GoFundMe Pro GTM integration activated, you can instead add the appropriate GA4 tags to your GTM instance. Learn how to set up GA4 tags in GTM.

GoFundMe Pro does not support having both GTM and GA4 integrations at the same time. If you prefer to turn off your GTM integration and use GA4 exclusively, please reach out to our care team for help.

Will GoFundMe Pro Care assist with our configuration of GA4?

GoFundMe Pro's Care team can assist with questions related to the initial integration with GA4, but they are not able to assist with the configuration of your GA4 dashboard or reports. If you need assistance, please reach out to Partners@gofundme.com, and we can make recommendations for an agency partner to assist.

How does GA4 view URLs with added parameters?

By default, GA4 views pages with parameters as different pages. If you do not want to record URLs with parameters as a different page, then exclude the query parameter so that GA4 excludes that from reporting.

What is GoFundMe Pro's data layer? What role does it play in GA4?

The data layer is a Javascript object between the GoFundMe Pro user interface and the application layer, which connects GoFundMe Pro to integrations like GA4. When a visitor to a GoFundMe Pro page takes an action (also called an ‘event’), like making a donation, data about that event is pushed to the data layer. GA4 then accesses this data through the GoFundMe Pro integration to make it available in the GA4 dashboard.

When new events are added to GoFundMe Pro's data layer, they'll automatically appear in your GA4 instance.

Learn more about GoFundMe Pro's data layer.

Is eCommerce tracking automatically turned on in my GA4 instance?

No, eCommerce tracking is not turned on by default. View our resource on setting up Google Tag Manager and the GA4 tag for ecommerce tracking.
