Map custom questions to Salesforce

Before you start

Mapping questions with the custom field mapping tool is only available in our Salesforce base (NPSP compatible) integration. If you're using our Salesforce NPC integration, check out our guide to learn how to map custom answers using Salesforce Flows.

View custom questions and answers in Salesforce

GoFundMe Pro custom questions and answers sync to Salesforce automatically. You can view the custom questions and answers as a related list on the Campaign, Opportunity, or Contact object.

Note: Studio campaigns need to be published before the questions will sync to Salesforce.

By default, custom question answers, including answers for pre-defined questions, map to the GoFundMe Pro Custom Answers object. For example, if you turn on the Cell Phone custom question, it will not map to a field on the Contact. Instead, it will map to the GoFundMe Pro Custom Answer object and appear in the related list.

Tip: To view all the custom questions that have synced to Salesforce, you can add the GoFundMe Pro Custom Questions object as a related list to your Campaign page layout.

Viewing questions and answers for attendees

The exception is answers from each attendee on a registration or ticket purchase. To view answers from attendees:

  1. Add the GoFundMe Pro Related Entity object as a related list on your Opportunity page layout
  2. Select the registration
  3. Select Related to see each GoFundMe Pro Custom Answer provided by the attendee

Map custom answers to other fields

By default, GoFundMe Pro questions and answers map to their objects in related lists. But you can map the answers to any field on the Contact, Campaign, or Opportunity object.

Note: You’ll need to turn on custom field mapping to map fields if you haven’t already.

To map answers to other fields:

  1. Select the Salesforce App Launcher and search for GoFundMe Pro Control Panel V2
  2. Select Custom Field Mapping
  3. For Source Object, select Custom Answer
  4. For Source Field, choose the custom question from GoFundMe Pro
  5. Choose your Destination Object and Destination Field
  6. Select Create

Tip: Custom questions for attendees can only be mapped to the Contact object.

Important notes

  • Mapping answers to other fields is not retroactive. Only future answers will sync to newly mapped fields.
  • Every custom question from each campaign must be mapped since they are campaign-specific. For example, if you use the Cell Phone custom question in four different campaigns, you’ll need to map the Cell Phone question four times to the field you choose. You can use the GoFundMe Pro campaign name to help differentiate between each of the questions.
  • The field type on the source field must match the destination field. For example, if the source field is a text field type, your destination field must also be a text field type. Note: Lookup fields are not supported.

Each custom question in the Source Field contains details to make mapping easier:

  1. Custom Question title
  2. Campaign name
  3. Custom Question ID
  4. Location of question in GoFundMe Pro
  5. Field type

Tip: When selecting a source field, a maximum of 50 questions will be displayed alphabetically. If you have a large amount of questions using the same title, try searching instead by Custom Question ID or the campaign name.

Troubleshooting and FAQ

Why can’t I find a custom question in Salesforce?

If a custom question is missing from related lists or the Source Field dropdown, then it may not exist as a record in Salesforce. When this happens, you’ll need to manually sync the question to Salesforce.

To fix this:

  1. Go to your campaign editor in GoFundMe Pro
  2. Go to Settings and Questions
  3. Make a small change to the question (like adding a letter or punctuation)
  4. Select Save
  5. Revert the change and save again
  6. Go to Custom Field Mapping and check for the question in the Source Field

Why is my custom answer not mapping as expected?

There are a few common causes:

  • Mismatching field types: field types from the Source Field and Destination Field must match. For example, if the source field is a text field type, your destination field must also be a text field type.
  • An answer wasn’t provided: a response may not have been provided by the donor or attendee. First, check if an answer was provided by viewing the transaction in GoFundMe Pro. If an answer was provided, but the record was not created in Salesforce, we recommend deleting the Opportunity record related to the transaction and manually resyncing it.
  • The custom question is for attendees and can only be mapped to the Contact object.

How do I map historical answers to other fields?

Creating a field map is not retroactive. If you have any data that synced before you created the map, delete the Opportunity record related to the GoFundMe Pro transaction that contained that information and manually resync it.

How do I add the related lists for custom questions and answers to a page?

To add a related list to an object in Salesforce, you need to be able to edit the page layout and add the GoFundMe Pro Custom Questions or GoFundMe Pro Custom Answers lists. If you are not sure if you have those permissions, check with your Salesforce administrator. If you have the permissions to edit the page layout, learn how to add related lists.
