NPSP and the Salesforce integration

Before you start

To use the NPSP extension, you need:

The Nonprofit Success Pack (NPSP) is an addition to Salesforce built specifically to help nonprofit organizations manage their relationships with donors. If you use GoFundMe Pro's Salesforce base integration, the NPSP Extension helps manage data with NPSP’s fields and objects. You can learn more about NPSP using Salesforce’s dedicated documentation.

Install the NPSP extension

  1. In your GoFundMe Pro account, select Apps & Integrations
  2. Select the Salesforce app
  3. In the recommended add-on banner, select Install
screenshot of recommended add-on banner to install NPSP extension

The installation may take a few minutes and your Control Panel will update when the installation is complete. You may have to refresh the page.

Note: If you don't see the recommended banner in the Salesforce app, then you need to install NPSP through Salesforce first.

Adjust NPSP settings

Once you install the NPSP extension, the next step is to adjust your settings.

  1. From the App Launcher, search for and select GoFundMe Pro Control Panel V2
  2. Select Settings
  3. Select NPSP
  4. Make the changes you need
  5. Select Save

Setting

Description

Create & Update NPSP Recurring Donations

Active: When new GoFundMe Pro Recurring Donors are created, NPSP Recurring Donation records will be created. Any subsequent transactions associated with a recurring donation in GoFundMe Pro will create a Recurring Donation record if one does not already exist.

Inactive: When disabled, the Salesforce integration will not create NPSP Recurring Donations.

Create & Update NPSP GAU Allocations

Active: All Campaigns, Recurring Donations, and Opportunities created via GoFundMe Pro will create an NPSP GAU Allocation record. Opportunities receive their Primary Campaign Source’s GAU Allocation.

Inactive: The Salesforce integration will not create GAU Allocations.

Set Default GAU

Allows an organization to associate an existing GAU with all new GoFundMe Pro Designations. The value for this setting must be an existing GAU’s Salesforce ID.

If left blank, a new GAU will be created for each Designation.

Create & Update NPSP GAUs

Active: The Salesforce integration will create GAUs.

Inactive: The Salesforce integration will not create GAUs.

Use GoFundMe Pro Opportunity Name on Resync

Active: Any updates to a GoFundMe Pro transaction will use the GoFundMe Pro Opportunity naming convention.

Inactive: All Opportunity creations and updates will honor the NPSP naming convention. For that reason, we recommend that this setting remain disabled.

Update the NPSP extension

Note: Update the Salesforce base integration package before updating the NPSP extension.

While NPSP updates automatically in Salesforce, you will need to update the NPSP extension from time to time. This ensures that the extension continues to work properly. To update:

  1. Log in to Salesforce
  2. From the App Launcher, search for and select GoFundMe Pro Control Panel V2
  3. Under Recommended Installations, select Update for GoFundMe Pro for NPSP

If the option to update does not appear, then your NPSP extension is up to date. We’ll notify you when an update is available.

NPSP email fields

By default, the Salesforce base integration uses the standard email address field to match contacts pulled from GoFundMe Pro. NPSP installs three additional email fields your organization can use to match new contacts:

  • Personal email
  • Work email
  • Alternate email

To turn on NPSP Email Matching:

  1. Login to Salesforce
  2. From the App Launcher, search for and select GoFundMe Pro Control Panel V2
  3. Select the Settings tab
  4. Select Account & Contact
  5. Under NPSP Email Matching, toggle to Active

Note: Starting with version 7.0, GoFundMe Pro will attempt to match these additional email fields, in addition to First Name and Last Name, after following your active duplicate rules. Learn more about Enhanced Contact Matching.

GAU

A General Accounting Unit (GAU) in NPSP is like Program Designations within GoFundMe Pro; both allow donations to be attached to a specific project or program.

To allow the Salesforce base integration to create and update GAUs:

  1. Login to Salesforce
  2. From the App Launcher, search for and select GoFundMe Pro Control Panel V2
  3. Select the Settings tab
  4. Select NPSP
  5. Under the Create & Update NPSP GAUs and Create & Update NPSP GAU Allocations options, toggle to Active

Organizations have a few options to associate GoFundMe Pro Designations and GAUs. These include:

One-to-one

The simplest option. When a Program Designation is created in GoFundMe Pro, the integration will create a GoFundMe Pro Designation record and an active GAU record with the same name.

External reference

When you create or edit a Program Designation in GoFundMe Pro, you can add the GAU’s Salesforce record ID to the External Reference ID field within GoFundMe Pro. When the Designation is synced to Salesforce, the Designation record will be linked to the existing GAU.

Learn how to create/edit Program Designations

Note: To find a GAU’s Salesforce record ID, select the GAU record and locate the ID in the URL. The ID appears as an 18-character alphanumeric ID.

Default

This is useful for organizations that want to tie any GoFundMe Pro Designations to a single GAU. You can set a Default GAU for all Designations without an External ID if you populate this field with the GAU’s Salesforce record ID.

To set a Default GAU:

  1. Login to Salesforce
  2. From the App Launcher, search for and select GoFundMe Pro Control Panel V2
  3. Select the Settings tab
  4. Select NPSP
  5. Under Set Default GAU, paste the Salesforce record ID of the GAU you want as your default

Note: Once created, a Designation-related GAU can be changed; however, this only impacts newly created data within Salesforce and not existing data.

Allocations

With Salesforce’s NPSP, donations can be attributed to a General Accounting Unit (GAU) via an object known as Allocations. When the NPSP extension is installed and settings are configured, an allocation record links a GAU to one of three objects: Opportunity, NPSP Recurring Donation, and Campaign (only for campaigns created before version 1.53).

Once an allocation record is initially created by the integration, it won’t be updated. This lets you alter how many GAUs are associated with a campaign and adjust the percentage allocated. This also prevents the integration from overwriting or altering any changes to the allocations.

Learn more about NPSP Allocations.

Note: Don't map a GoFundMe Pro Designation to the default NPSP GAU. Doing so can cause failed API requests as the integration sets GAU allocations based on a percentage instead of an amount.

Opportunity

The NPSP extension creates GAU allocations based on the GoFundMe Pro transaction’s program designation. Even though an allocation in Salesforce can represent a specific amount or a percentage of a donation, GoFundMe Pro donations are always allocated 100% to a single GAU.

Recurring donation

Opportunities created from a recurring donation will receive the allocation attributed to the program designation of the recurring giving plan in GoFundMe Pro.

Note: NPSP Recurring Donation records will receive a GAU allocation record that corresponds to the GAU allocation on the primary campaign in Salesforce. After version 1.53, the integration no longer sets campaign GAU allocations, and it is expected that the NPSP Recurring Donation record will not contain a GAU allocation.

Campaign

With version 1.53, the integration will no longer assign a GAU allocation to a campaign in Salesforce based on the program designation of the campaign in GoFundMe Pro.

Before version 1.53

When a campaign was created or updated in GoFundMe Pro, the integration would create an allocation record aligned with the GAU mapped to the default program designation of the campaign in GoFundMe Pro. While NPSP supports multiple GAUs attached to a single campaign, only one default program designation can be applied to a campaign in GoFundMe Pro. As a result, the allocation will be set as 100%.

Recurring donations

When a new recurring donation is created in GoFundMe Pro and the Create & Update NPSP Recurring Donations setting is active, the NPSP Extension will create an NPSP Recurring Donation record.

Note: When recurring donations are made in GoFundMe Pro, the NPSP extension will delete open Pledged Opportunities and replace them with the Closed Won records.

Opportunity

The NPSP extension doesn’t significantly alter how the Salesforce integration handles Opportunity creation. However, there are three significant changes that occur during Opportunity processing that are specific to the NPSP Extension.

  • The Salesforce base integration will now populate the Primary Contact (npsp__Primary_Contact__c) field
  • The Salesforce base integration no longer creates a primary Opportunity Contact Role for the donor.  NPSP now handles the creation of the Contact Role via the Contact used in the Primary Contact field.
  • GoFundMe Pro will now add data to the NPSP Honoree Name (npsp__Honoree_Name__c) and Tribute Type (npsp__Tribute_Type__c) fields when donors fill out the dedication section on GoFundMe Pro donation forms.

Note: A Contact record will not be created for the Honoree.

NPSP naming conventions

To ensure that donations use the NPSP naming conventions, you need to set the NPSP Opportunity Name. To do so:

  1. Login to Salesforce
  2. From the App Launcher, search for and select NPSP
  3. Select the NPSP Settings tab
  4. In the menu, select Donations
  5. Select Opportunity Names

From here, create a custom Opportunity Name.

Note: Make sure the Use Classy Opportunity Name on Resync setting is inactive in the GoFundMe Pro Control Panel V2 settings. If this setting is active, any updates from GoFundMe Pro on the Opportunity will overwrite the Opportunity name to the default. To learn more, see our guide on the Salesforce integration settings.
