Images in legacy campaigns

Before you start

This article covers images in legacy campaign types. Check out our other article on using images in Studio campaigns.

You can add images to several parts of your campaign through built-in features. Acceptable file types are JPG, PNG, or GIF and the file size limit is 2 or 4 MB, depending on the page.

Note: GIFs in Hero images do not animate, so we recommend using a JPG or PNG.

Recommendations

Best practices for images on the web include:

  • Use JPG for real-life photos and PNG for logos/designs
  • Use images less than 500 KB to ensure speedy page load times
  • Add alt text so your page is accessible to donors with vision impairment

Image height and width recommendations will depend on the specific image’s container.

Hero images

A hero image is a large, above-the-fold image that appears under the GoFundMe Pro landing page header. These are typically engaging images that inspire support for your cause. The Hero Image should give supporters an immediate connection to your cause and help you to tell your story.

Your image should be about 1280 x 720 px for the best-quality hero image.

To upload a hero image:

  1. Go to the campaign editor
  2. Under Hero Image, select Upload an image

Once you upload your file, the image editor will appear, where you can edit the positioning to control how it appears on desktop, tablet, and mobile devices.

Image editor

In the image editor, you can rotate the image, zoom in or out, and adjust the image’s focal point.

Design tips

  • Zooming in a bit gives you a greater range of motion when moving the focal point around. To zoom in and out, use the slider at the bottom. You can also use the mouse's scroll wheel or two fingers on your laptop’s touchpad.
  • Try images without a single focal point or images with unique focal points. For example, an image of a crowd of people rather than an individual person can make your hero image look good on multiple devices. If you want a single focal point, moving it to the side of your headline can add visual appeal.

Changing the background

Under the Design tab, you can edit the Hero image’s background to adjust the color and opacity to add a filter effect. Or adjust the image’s position, opacity, blur, and height.

Color: Controls the color of the Hero image's background.

Color opacity: Controls the opacity of the background color. Zero percent opacity makes the color transparent. Move the slider from 0 to 100% to gradually add a color tint to your Hero Image.

To add a tint to your Hero Image, choose the color that you want your tint to be. Then, use the color opacity sliders to adjust the color transparency. Adding a tint can help text stand out on particularly bright hero images. Try it out using the hex code #1A3A5# and 100% color opacity.

Image: Allows you to add a Hero Image. Select Upload an image to add one. To change Hero Images, hover over the uploaded image and select the X. If you don't use a Hero Image, the background color will display.

Image position: This option controls the positioning of the Hero Image (for example, whether it displays in tiles or stays fixed). It only appears if you use a Hero Image.

The image position you use depends on your branding needs. We recommend trying them all out to see which best matches your image. That said, Cover & Fixed is a GoFundMe Pro favorite. Using it keeps your Hero Image stationary, which adds visual appeal and a unique scrolling effect.

  • Adaptive Cover - The image will be centered and stretched to the total vertical height of the block, but the horizontal sides will be cropped as the width of the screen shifts.
  • Center - The image is centered within the content block.
  • Tile - The image is repeated horizontally and vertically to cover all viewable space within the content's container.
  • Stretch - The image will stretch to match only the width of the user's screen resolution.
  • Cover & Fixed - The image is stretched to accommodate the height and width of the user's entire screen and is locked so it will not scroll with the page. This may give your campaign a desirable three-dimensional effect.

Image opacity: Controls the opacity of the Hero Image Zero percent opacity makes the image transparent.

Image blur: Controls the blur of the image. Move the slider from 0 to 100% to gradually add more blur.

  • Opacity - this setting affects the image's transparency. The higher the Opacity %, the less transparent the image is. The lower the Opacity %, the more transparent the image becomes. (not available for all images)
  • Blur - this setting affects how blurry the image appears. The higher the Blur %, the more blurred the image will be. The lower the %, the clearer the image will be. (not available for all images)

Hero height: This feature fills the browser window height with the background image. Rather than get into the technical details, this feature ensures your image looks good on any device. We recommend seeing what your campaign looks like with this turned on and off to see if there's an effect. It may only sometimes have an effect and depends on the image you use.

Headline images

A headline image is a branded logo that people use as headlines on GoFundMe Pro landing pages. Unlike standard text, a headline image gives you more control over your page's appearance.

  1. Go to the campaign editor
  2. Toggle on the Headline Image
  3. Select Upload an image
Tip: The ideal image size will depend on the image’s design, but we recommend aiming for a height of around 215 px.

Change the alignment

You can adjust the alignment of your headline image in Ticketed and Registration with Fundraising campaigns. This option is only available in those two campaign types.

To adjust the alignment:

  1. In the campaign editor, select the Design tab
  2. Select Hero
  3. Next to Alignment, select Left or Center

Logos

On GoFundMe Pro campaigns, you can upload your organization’s logo in the page's header and add a link for supporters to navigate back to your organization’s home page.

What image size should I use for my logo?

For the best quality, use a 300 x 50 px image.

Upload your logo

You can add your logo when you first create your campaign. To add it later or edit it:

  1. Open the campaign you want to edit
  2. Select Pages
  3. Select any page in the list
  4. Next to Setup, select the Design tab
  5. Select your logo

This opens the header content block where you can add or delete your logo and adjust the header’s background.

Your logo will need to fit inside of a square container to display properly on your campaign’s pages. Because of this, you may need to make a change to your logo.

FAQs

Do you have any other design tips?

It helps to recognize that your landing page has two planes: a foreground and a background. The foreground contains important information like the Headline Image and donation buttons. Foreground elements always re-center no matter the screen size so supporters can view them.

The background contains your Hero Image and does not re-center (it zooms in and out to adjust). The background is meant to enhance or draw attention to your foreground elements. That said, the Headline Image should not cover the focal point of your Hero Image.

In short, it’s all about balance.
